Adultery Saturdays: Why Death Threats Shouldn’t Threaten Your Swagger (And Surprise! We Say “Swagger.”)

When you’re good at what you do, it attracts attention. People tweet compliments at you, share your shit on Facebook, send brief, (yet straight to the point) marriage proposals from Sweden—

—And also slap you across the face with more criticism, insults, and cheap shots than you ever saw coming.

-

We’ve heard cited over and over again from many. How to deal with those wretched, asshat dream zappers?

-

Fortunately, we’ve got some practice. And the bottom line is that being noteworthy isn’t all rainbows and sunshine, (or even rainbows and partly cloudy), because when you attract attention, competition comes flocking, and suddenly?

There are people trying to steal your thunder, (and probably your lightning, too), rain on your parade, and beat you to the finish line.

Side note: Why are there so many weather metaphors?

But suddenly, everyone’s jumping up and down in your face, either screaming profanities in your general direction or trying their damndest to one-up you and prove that the sun doesn’t shine out of your ass. (<–See?! WEATHER METAPHOR. Weathaphor?)

And it’s so easy to be swept up in their antics. To get sidetracked by what your competition’s doing. To zero in only on how they’re planning to stay on your heels and outdo you.

But the fact of the matter is that as long as you work your ass off, 100% every single day? They won’t be able to stop you. (Or, as Ash so classily wanted to edit in, “They ain’t got shit.”)

Yeah, they might hate you.

They might send emails that contains profanities you haven’t heard since that time you accidentally hit on that man who turned out to be married to a very dramatic (and angry) runner-up for Miss Colorado.

-

And they might tag you on Twitter, threatening to call your mom and tell her just how bad you’ve been. (No? That’s only happened to me, then?) <—Actually happened to me.

But they can’t get in your way because they’re already behind you.

Don’t get bogged down in everyone else’s bullshit.

Instead, become the best in your business.

Become their #1 competition—but don’t make them yours.

-

As our (incredibly motivational & abilicious) friend Dre All Day says, “When there’s people comin’ at your throat…LET THEM WORRY ABOUT YOU.”

Quit playing defense, step up your offense, and KEEP MOVING.

And let them worry about how they’re gonna deal with YOU.

Not the other way around.

What’s the most ridiculous hate mail you’ve ever gotten? Tell us the story below, (because there’s totally strength in numbers, and sometimes laughter really is the best medicine…after penicillin and a shot of whiskey.)
